Charles Dickens, in his travel book
Pictures from Italy, noted that as he was approaching Rome he saw a whole series of small shrines by the side of the road picturing events related to Christ's suffering and death on the cross. It was, he said, "a perfect toy-shop." Thus the title of the diptych shown below.
