In Song of Solomon 1:5, the woman proclaims, "I am black but beautiful." Most commentators point out that this probably refers to her sun-tanned condition from working outside. My own version of her (constructed from a collaged hat mold, shoe mold and driftwood) is probably not very beautiful, but of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
