REPETITION IN JEREMIAH

As is true of all the books in the Bible, the massive book of Jeremiah is marked by repetition and duplication. This can first be seen on a large scale by comparing the similarly numbered pairs of sections in Figure 1.

And even within each of these seven units there is seen a sort of symmetry in which the different sub-units line up in terms of repeated phraseology and themes. But I would like to concentrate instead on listing some of the events, theology and themes that sections III and III' have in common. However, before I do, it must be admitted that this phenomenon is probably only to be expected between two such large sections in a book that repeatedly recycles the same phrases and ideas. The first two examples in Figure 2 below could be considered as pairs of bookends for these combined sections.

The listing above helps point out to the reader those themes which Jeremiah wished to most emphasize in his writings. It can also be used as evidence against the belief of many scholars that the book of Jeremiah was written by a number of different authors over the years rather than being the sole product of the prophet himself.
