ANDREW THE APOSTLE: THE GO-TO GO-BETWEEN

What little we know about Andrew is found in John's Gospel.

He first appears in the gospel record in John 1:35-42 where we learn that he was actually the one who brought his more famous brother Simon Peter to Jesus. If that were all we knew about Andrew, it would be enough to earn him a secure place in Christian history. But there is more.

John actually lists Andrew's name before that of Peter in v. 44, unlike the Synoptic accounts which list him second. This may indicate that Andrew is the older of the two brothers.

In John 6:8, it is Andrew who brings the boy with a few loaves and fishes to Jesus, right after Philip had given up on the idea of feeding the multitude. This demonstrates his tremendous faith in the Lord's ability to somehow use them to good purpose, despite all appearances.

Finally Andrew goes along with Philip when, in John 12:21-22 some Greeks ask to be shown Jesus. You get the idea that perhaps Philip didn't know quite what do do and had to go to Andrew for advice and help.

Andrew is the very type of a Christian that I have seen in several churches – one eager to help out whatever the circumstances and challenges, driven by tremendous faith and the willingness to do things without any thought of glory or recognition.
