THE DEITY OF CHRIST IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

In another post, I discussed the problem of trying to make a theological statement by stringing together a number of different Bible passages in a chain of reasoning in which each step has to be correct in order for the conclusion to be correct. However, it is an entirely different manner if one has a number of independent statements that seem to each say the same thing. In that case, there is no chain of reasoning involved because even if your interpretation on only one of those statements is correct, that is enough to prove your case.

There are a tleast six passages from John's writings alone that seem to establish the deity of Christ (see below). If you try any single one of them out on a Jehovah Witness, he or she will have another possible interpretation for each passage. I know because I have had such a conversation with one of them. Their challenge, of course, is that they have to prove that every one of these various passages says something else. Let's assume that their alternative explanations have a 50:50 chance of being correct each time. The probability of their being correct all six times calculates to only 1.5%, leaving a 98.5% chance that the NT teaches the deity of Christ at least once. And I easily located nine additional NT passages that appear to teach the same thing. So the accumulated surety of that doctrine being taught is 99.997%, even if there is only a 50% chance that any individual passage teaches it.

“In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)

“...He was calling God his own Father, thereby making himself equal to God.” (John 5:18)

“The Father and I are one.” (John 10:30)

“If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.” (John 14:9)

“Thomas answered him,'My Lord and my God.'” (John 20:29)

“...His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life (I John 5:20)

“...the Messiah, who is God over all...” (Romans 9:5)

“...Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (I Corinthians 1:24)

“...Christ who is the image of God.” (II Corinthians 4:4)

“...Jesus Christ, who though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as

something to be exploited.” (Philippians 2:5-6)

“...for in Him all the fullness of God dwells in bodily form.” (Colossians 2:9)

“...our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.” (Titus 2:13)

“...but of His Son he says, 'Your throne, O God, is forever and forever.'” (Hebrews 1:8)

“...our God and Savior Jesus Christ...” (2 Peter 1:1)

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God (Rev. 1:8) / “I am the Alpha and the Omega

[says Jesus.]” (Revelation 22:13)
