NOTES ON JEREMIAH

Jeremiah 1:13 Cauldron itself was probably upright. But the hearth in which it was being heated was

open to the north.

Jeremiah 2:13 This shows the attempts of man to provide his two basic needs: security and

significance.

Jeremiah 3:13 Lit. “turn, you turning children”

Jer. 3:15 You get the leaders you deserve.

Jeremiah 6:28 There are cognate words for merchant (rokel) and swindler (rakil).

Jeremiah 9:4 see Jer. 6:28 note.

Jeremiah 10 The choruses praising God (6-7, 10, etc.) are missing in the Septuagint and the Dead Sea

scrolls.

Jeremiah 12:1 Like Job, Jeremiah has little hope that he would win over God in a court of law.

Jeremiah 18:1 Again, God tells Jeremiah to go somewhere (as in 17:19).

Jeremiah 20:1 A 6-7th centtury BC bulla (seal impression) was found in tailings from excavations

from the temple area. It was inscribed with Immer's name on it.

Jeremiah 29:7 This is somewhat similar to aid given Germany and Japan after WWII, compared to the

aftermath of WWI.

Jeremiah 32:27 God quotes Jeremiah's words in v. 17 back to him.

Jer. 32:29 At the remains of Ashkelon the first evidence of roof-top altars was found.

Jeremiah 35:7 The idea was not to be overly involved in society, such as separatist Christian groups

today.

Jeremiah 37:3; 38:1 Archeologist Mazar uncovered a clay bulla in the City of David in 2005 reading

“Belonging to Jehucal, son of Shelemiah, son of Shovi.” Three years later a bulla was uncovered that

stated it belonged to Gedaliah, the son of Pashhur (Jer. 38:1).

Jeremiah 39:3 A Babylonian tablet dating to the same general time was deciphered in 2007 giving the

name Nebo-sarsechim as the chief eunuch, Nergalsharusur the Sin-magir, and Nabuzeriddinam as the

chief cook (or butcher of  humans (Jer. 39:9).

Jer. 39:18 It has been supposed that Ebed-Melech the Cushite accompanied Jeremiah to Africa, back

to the land of his birth. See Jer. 42:19-20 and Jer. 43:7 for Jeremiah's exile into Egypt.

Jeremiah 40:8 See II Kings 25:23.

Jer. 40:14 A seal impression found at Tell el-Umeiri has the name of King Baalis of the Ammonites.

Jeremiah 42:10 is parallel to 1:10.

Jeremiah 47:4  Archeological evidence demonstrating the ferocity of the Babylonian attack has been

found at Ashkelon.

Jeremiah 51:15 One proposed translation is: "though I have filled you with men like the locust

(i.e. increased your population), yet they (your assailants) lift up their shout against you."
