Jacob again finds himself at the border of his homeland, this time returning instead of fleeing, and again (as with the dream of the ladder to heaven) has a heavenly encounter. The footnote to my NRSV Study Bible notes perceptively, "Jacob had feared to see Esau's face (v. 20), but instead saw God face to face and lived."
