DOES DEUTERONOMY 28 TEACH CANNIBALISM ?

Concerning cannibalism, here is one moral objection to biblical teachings that warrants at least a

minute of discussion. This gem comes off of the internet: “In Deuteronomy Satan instructs

nonbelievers to eat their own children or else he'll make the children suffer unbearable, chronic

sickness. Did I say Satan? I meant God. Sorry, my bad.” I'm afraid this is typical of many snarky and

total untrue comments from atheists you will find online. So what does the Deuteronomy passage

actually say?

Deuteronomy 28:47-57 “Because you did not serve the LORD your God (these are not non-believers being addressed; these are the Jews who knew better)...therefore you will serve your enemies..The LORD will bring a nation from far away...it shall besiege you in all your towns throughout the land...In the desperate straits to which the enemy siege reduces you, you will eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your own sons and daughters.

Deuteronomy 28:58-68 “If you do not diligently observe all the words of this law...then the LORD will overwhelm both you and your offspring with severe and lasting afflictions and grievous and lasting maladies...

Note the three lies in the internet comment:

    1. These words are not at all addressed to non-believers. They were said to the Jews, who knew better.

    2. God doesn't command them to eat their children at all. He just predicts that an enemy is going to lay siege to their towns and starve them to the point that some of them will be driven to such terrible acts.

    3. Lastly, the threat of disease has nothing whatsoever to do with whether or not they eat their children, only whether they decide to repent and follow God's word.
