Bible Quiz: Answers (Don't Peek!)

1. In which of these languages was the Bible originally written?

The answers are a, e and f. Most of the OT is written in Hebrew with Aramaic portions in the later books such as Daniel and Ezra-Nehemiah. The NT is written in Greek with a few individual words in Aramaic, which was probably the language spoken by Jesus. That would explain some of the minor differences recorded for his words when comparing the various gospel accounts, since they had to be translated into Greek. By the way, "Reformed Egyptian Hieroglyphics" is the supposed language that The Book of Mormon was written in.

2. What is the name of the last book of the Bible?

a. The Apocrypha b. Revelations c. The Apocalypse d. The Pseudepigrapha

The answer is c, the Greek word translated as The Revelation. Answer b is probably the most common response. However, it is not only incorrect, but also gives the false impression that the book is a series of individual revelations instead of one overarching revelation. The Apocrypha refers to books of the OT era that appear in Catholic and Orthodox Bibles but are not considered part of the Canon by most Protestant groups. The Pseudepigrapha refers to Jewish and Christian writings that did not even make it into the Apocrypha, much less the Bible.

3. Where in the Bible could you find the Ten Commandments listed?

All of these answers are correct. It is first recorded in Exodus 20 and repeated in Deuteronomy 5. The Pentateuch is another name for the first five books of the Bible.

4. Which of the four Evangelists was/were one of the twelve apostles?

Only a and d.   Mark traditionally got most of his information from Peter, and Luke relied on a number of first-hand sources.

5. Which of the following is most likely to believe in the Rapture?

If one subscribes to the popular notion of Christians being taken into heaven to escape a time of tribulation, then the only answer is c.  An amillennialist interprets the Thessalonians passage which teaches the rising of Christians to meet Christ in the air in quite a different manner. A postmillenialist believes in a gradual improvement of spiritual and material conditions until we achieve a heaven on earth. And a full preterist believes that all of the OT and NT prophecies were fulfilled years ago.

6. The word “Bible” comes from biblia, which is Greek for “book.” True or false?

Biblia is actually Greek for “books,” stressing the fact that the Bible is in one sense a library rather than an individual book.

7. What is the difference between exegesis and eisegesis?

Exegesis is a fancy name for proper interpretation of a writing – getting the intended meaning out of it. Eisegesis is reading into a text the meaning you want to see instead of the intended meaning.

8. What is the relationship between the Song of Solomon, the Wisdom of Solomon and the Song of Songs?

Song of Solomon and Song of Songs are two common names for the same poetry book found in the OT after Ecclesiastes. The Wisdom of Solomon is a book in the Apocrypha and not found in most Protestant Bibles.

9. Who wrote the Epistle to the Hebrews?

Only God knows the answer to this one. However, my own personal favorite is Luke.

10. When was the Bible first divided up into chapters?

The answer is c. This happened during the 13th century, and the division into individual verses did not occur until the 16th century. In each case, it was done by an individual. Therefore these divisions should not be considered sacred, and in some cases they are actually quite misleading.
